I don’t get it. A console that’s more powerful than most computers out there can’t handle browsing? How is it that the PS3 browser can run out of system memory if I have more than a few webpages open at once? What friggin sense does that make?
Many sites, like digg.com, don’t even work. As soon as I go on the site, it just loads a white page replacing it. No copy/paste feature? That should be unheard of! You can’t even select text! And how come it doesn’t already come with the most recent version of Adobe Flash. I can watch Youtube videos but I can’t see anything on gametrailers.com.
And why is it so damned slow? I have high speed cable internet at 10 Mbps that flies on both my PC and my laptop, why does the PS3 browser feel like I’m on 9600 dial-up? Sometimes it’s so slow I think it froze! Other times, it’s actually frozen and I have to reboot.
I understand that this browser is better than the Wii one, and I know that the XBox 360 doesn’t even have a browser, but how hard would it have been for Sony to just put Firefox or Opera on the PS3 instead of making a useless crappy browser of their own? I’ve had a better experience browsing on cell phones and pocket PC’s and that just ain’t right!

“I understand that this browser is better than the Wii one, and I know that the XBox 360 doesn’t even have a browser,” Whats your point if you don’t like use a COMPUTER!

I agree with you…for the amount of power these little devices have you would think that browsing the web would be a slice of pie…

these gadgets really grind my gears…we spend so much on them and there is always something that lets us down!

Article is a lame rant, author is a faggot.

“Whats your point if you don’t like use a COMPUTER!”
You’re obviously a dimwit so let me repeat my point. The PS3’s browser sucks. Wow, that wasn’t too hard was it?
Stupid PS3 fanboys. I own both a 360 and a PS3. It sucks that the 360 doesn’t have one. That doesn’t mean that the PS3’s browser is good.

Dumb rant, but I do agree!
How awesome would it be to run hula videos from the PS3? Wow!
That would beet XBox360 in a day! If you could view more VOD websites through the PS3’s browsers, that would be an amazing selling point.
NBC’s hula on the PS3 browser would be awesome!

How is this a dumb rant? Makes perfect sense to me. I’d complain about a crap browser, too if it I spent a ton of cash on a piece of hardware. If you have an extra on a system, it’s either coded well or it shouldn’t be included. It’s pointless aggravation for your users if it’s badly done.

You know, Linux also runs on the PS3… And then you can have Opera, Firefox, Lynx, and many many more browsers if you so desire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3_linux
It’s Power PC hardware so not all distros will run on it.

I’m actually very hesitant to install Linux on the PS3. I read up on it and it seems a bit intimidating. I have Ubuntu installed on my desktop (as well as crappy Vista) and Xubuntu on my laptop but those installations were a breeze.
Maybe I’ll give it a try after all. I’ll read about the risks first before I decide though

There’s hope! http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/ps3-firmware-2-20-to-add-blu-ray-profile-2-0-support/
The next firmware for the PS3 promises improvements to the browser!

EVERYONE who uses the browser wants to scream. It is the one weak link in the system. Never enough memory, constant freezing and pathetic flash support.
Forums are full of disgruntled people demanding better flash etc. Dame shame they went with NetFront and hav piss-poor 256MB memory … pathetic!!!

scmti, ps3 browser is MAJOR let down, forget virtual world (forums), iam still to meet a satisfied customer in real life…it feels they developed they have developed and A380 which runs and have the features of cessna!

The PS3 browser is a disgrace! Constant lack of memory, freezing issues, totally inadequate flash, many aplications dont work etc, etc.
Needs a MAJOR update or start again.

Meh, the PS3’s browser is alright. Not all that great, but not terrible either.
I do however, think this rant was rather long and pointless when you got right down to it.
So you don’t like the browser too much.
Then use your PC.

Actually, I think the Wii browser is superior… it’s easier to navigate and enter data, the low res image loads faster, and it doesn’t crash.
Neither one of them have enough plugins (flash, etc.) to make them practical though.

Isn’t it advertised as a COMPUTER entertainment system? Anybody who says “so buy a computer” are missing the point, that’s like saying my ps3 doesn’t play blue-ray movies, so get a blue-ray player. Constant freezing, blank pages and no features like flash and something as basic as copy and paste, makes me wonder where the “computer” is in computer entertainment system?.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:50 am
All it really needs is flash. Who the hell oked a flashless browser?
September 27th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
I agree. I have a Wii and I don’t use its browser. I had no expectations of it on such a low power machine (see: not fanboy). I did have those expectations from the PS3.
Now, I don’t care that the PS3 displays its website in hi-res. I’d rather have a working 800×640 than what it does.
1) out of memory on tons of sites. Like Delicious, which is text-only? How lame.
2) constant ‘run plug-in?’ nagging for Flash? OK, I allow the plug-in once, let it be. ’s not like I keep my bank accounts on my PS3.
3) Why doesn’t it resize to my 1080p aspect ratio, instead of occupying the center only? Other web browsers resize, no?
4) Last, but not least, no support for RadioParadise and other internet radios.
I got it to play Blu-Rays and to watch/listen to media on the web and things that don’t require much typing. I figured that was a better alternative than watching YouTube on my laptop.
The PS3 works great as a Blu-Ray, but darn does it suck as a browser.

incredible why thy dont do anything to solve this, flash 7 when most aplications use 9
