spore_creature_1.jpgIf you haven’t already done so, pick up the new SPORE Creature Creature now! My wife and I did yesterday and we’ve been having fun making cute cuddly creatures since! Not impressed you say? You don’t know what the big deal is all about? Well you’ve come to the right place! Read on and you’ll see why this Creature Creator is unlike and character creator you’ve ever seen in a game before!

Amount of Parts: What’s a creature creator without choices? In the demo, you’d only have access to 25% of the parts that the full version will have. That’s what shocks me! If these were the only parts available, SPORE would STILL be the most robust creature creator out there! All the parts are different one from the other and are modifiable too (stretching, shrinking, etc..)

Parts can be placed anywhere: Tired of having creatures that conform to any real-life animal conventions? Well say no more! SPORE allows you to put a head on a foot, a tail on a neck, wings on top of hands, or anything on top of anything you could ever want! Why is this important? Well, without this, we have a “choose your head, choose your body type” system that wouldn’t be worthy of SPORE. Without this feature, we would be limited! No one who wishes to create wants limitations!

You can put (almost) as many or as few of a part you want: Do you think two heads are better than one? How about 12 heads, 16 arms, 4 sets of wings and 1 foot! Impossible you say? Think again!

They animate as soon as you place them: This was the part that gave my wife the biggest kick! As soon as you place eyes on you creature, it blinks them and looks around! Place a mouth? Listen to it roar, chirp, or sing! Creature react to you giving them parts as well as taking them away! This feature really gives you the impression that your creature is alive and before you’re even done creating!

The coloring system allows a non-artist to create works of art:No choosing simple solids colors for YOUR creations, and no clumsy paintbrush to cause disdain in the paint-uninitiated.  Instead, the color system allows you to choose a few colors and patterns and then takes the time to blend them in a beautiful and believable way!

Once finished, the way a creature moves makes perfect sense: Did you give your creature only 1 leg? Watch it hop around the screen! Gave it 8 legs? Watch is scamper along as if it really was an arachnid! How they pulled this off so seamlessly is perhaps the most impressive part of the creator! If your creature looks heavy, it’ll move as a heavy creature should! The way they SOUND even makes sense depending on what mouth was chosen and on the lung capacity! PURE GENIUS!

Ease of use: At no point did I wonder how something is done! Just drag, drop, rotate, expand at will and to your heart’s desire!

My first creation didn’t come out all that nice but I was still trying things out. I was going for a cross between a duck and a dinosaur (no, not a duck-bill dinosaur smart-asses):

In my humble opinion, my second one came out a lot better! For this one, I tried to make a reptilian bee!
