There’s something really confusing about how some companies decide what games to make. Every true Street Fighter fan out there was hoping for Street Fighter 4 to be a gorgeous 2D fighter with controls similar to Street Fighter 3. What does Capcom do? They make a 3D Street Fighter 2 remake with scaled-back controls and crappy new characters and they try their best to convince us it’ll be as good as a 2D fighter. Why not oblige us in the first place? Why not call it Street Fighter EX 4 instead? No one would complain, everyone expects mediocrity from the EX fighters. Why must they drag our formerly beloved franchise through the mud?
Then we have Soul Calibur 4 taking away all seriousness from a previously amazing franchise by adding Star Wars characters. Why not just come out with a Namc
o Fighting Jam or such nonsense and throw in everything but the kitchen sink a-la Marvel vs Capcom 2 (which was actually good) or Mortal Kombat vs DC universe (which will most likely suck)? Why do they have to resort to cheap marketing tricks? Did Master Chief belong in Dead or Alive 4? No! But at least he wasn’t part of the story and wasn’t on the frigging box cover! If they got the license, why didn’t they just come out with a Star Wars 3d fighting game! I’m sure that would have made many a Jedi-nerd soil their beds without upsetting Soul Calibur fans. This isn’t Super Smash brothers people!
Now I hear that my beloved Castlevania series has also been victimized and I’m on the verge of tears. If Konami wants to spew out one crappy Metal Gear game after the other, that’s their problem, there are enough fanboys out there to keep that series alive, but why must they mess with my beloved Castlevania? Is asking for a hi-def 2D metroidvania really too much? Why don’t companies make the games that gamers want? Just read the comments on kotaku and see for yourself, fans are not happy. Honestly, I have no idea who Konami or Capcom hired to decide which games get made but they both need to be locked away. And if it’s somehow the same person, they need to be shot!

Although I agree with much of what you say, especially about SF4, I will still try it with an open mind and hope to love it. However, adding darth vader (albeit silly) does not ruin sould calibur in anyway, the game’s depth is incredible, and they always had one or two silly characters (lizardman). The fact is as long as my favs are still there and the fighting system stays the same, I expect long hours with this title.
Oh and saying what you say about metal gear does little more than make you lose credibilty, simply because you havent played any except the first.
You seem to suffer from a bad case of bitteritus. You simply love dissing things even if you havent played them… One can only hope you get cured one day and start to develop opinions that are actually based on SOMETHING.

Hytham seems to know what he’s talking about. Your article is good but you failed to mention how good the Mortal Kombat series is. That game really put games of that nature on the map.
I also find that figther games are much better played on XBOX 360 then it is on the silly contols of the PS3.

Jay – you need a check up from your neck up…street fighter put those type of games on the map. Metal gear is pretty sick; i understand Osama’s concern with all the cut-scenes, but the storyline, and gameplay are always top notch imo…I personally will get SF4 just to try it out, or swing by hythams and whop him in it:)

This guys a friggin’ idiot. You want to tell me how is SF4 3d? You mean the 3d looking background?
All the action takes place in just 2 dimensions so as not to stress you out too much.
After having gotten pretty decent at SF4 I think it’s a great fighting game.
Also, SF4 has been nominated for a BAFTA:

The game has 3D graphics. Not 2D graphics. The gameplay is in 2d, yes, but that’s obviously not what I was referring to. It’s ok if you don’t understand the difference, I’ll try to use smaller words and simpler concepts from now on.
