sc4_sm_ivy.jpgFirst let me say I have been a Soul Calibur enthusiast not just from Soul Calibur 1, but from its often forgotten  predecessor Soul Blade on PS1, remembering vividly the crazy hours I dedicated to the world tour mode in order to get every possible sword!

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about the next gen title, and I must say I am quite pleased. First of all if you haven’t already seen, the presentation is incredible. The lighting, character models and overall art style is masterful. However it may at times feel a little congested, the simplicity of the older games due to less graphical capability made it feel more raw and precise. Here characters have so much beautiful follow through and secondary action with cloth, armor and hair, albeit stunningly gorgeous may be a little much (just a little). Yet every time I pop that game in I am taken back by the beauty of it.

marvelvsdc.jpgWith Iron Man holding the banner for Marvel and Dark Knight (or Joker, really) leading the way for DC, the question has to be asked, who makes the best comic-related movies?

It’s hard to compare since Marvel has 30 movies while DC only has 19 and more than half of DC’s movies are about either Superman or Batman. Still, the question has to be asked and hopefully answered. Please note, for the purpose of this comparison, we’re only taking into account live-action movies (ie: no animations).

So how do we go about this? Do we only count the good movies for each side and see who has the most? Do we count all of the movies and take a percentage of good vs bad? Or do we look at the best single comic-book movie and crown the champion that way? Let’s do all three!

nintendo_wii_motionplus.jpgI have to say that I am boggled at how successful Nintendo is these days. They literally gave their hardcore fans the finger with comments like “the only ppl who want hard disk space in their wii are geeks and otakus” or with this year’s E3. More and more Nintendo has been laughing in all our faces. I own a wii, and can see how it really brings in non gamers, but its NOT a next gen system and worse its controls are completely broken.

mkvssf2.jpg I’ve been a fighting game fan as far back as I remember. I’ve played most of the iterations of both the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games in the arcades on the first day of their respective launches. I would have even done the same for Street Fighter 4 had there been an arcade anywhere in Montreal that had it. Although I love the genre to death, that doesn’t mean I hold all of its constituents to the same esteem. In fact, I’ve preferred the Street Fighter series hands-down for many reasons.

fatprincess.jpgApparently, a few feminists are in an uproar over the subject of the upcoming Fat Princess game. Really? They don’t have anything more important to bitch about than this? If you’re not in the know, the game features two teams trying to “capture” a princess and then feed ridiculous amounts of cake to her so that she’s too fat for the other team to take. If you ask me I think it’s a riot! As soon as I saw the announcement for this game I was in love!

left4dead.jpgI know I can’t be the only person out there looking forward to this one! Four player coop zombie bashing? Am I dreaming?? If so, please don’t wake me up until after it launches in November! Call me a sucker for zombies but Dead Rising was by far my favorite single-player experience on the X-Box 360!

Yes, I’ve played Oblivion, GTA4, Rainbow Six, Call of Duty 4, and Gears of War. No, I’m not on medication and, to the best of my knowledge, don’t need to be. Although Dead Rising was far from perfect, its biggest fault was the lack of coop. It was almost a crime! Enter: Left 4 Dead to fill that need!

e3logoLike most people working in the industry and game fanatics alike, I’ve been watching the news trickling out of E3 rather closely.

As far as I’m concerned Microsoft had the best E3 presence and by far, but E3 was lame anyway. I have to confess, I’ve only watched the Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony announcements live and read about the others so I might have missed some info.

ff13crystalengine2.jpgToday at E3 Microsoft had their press conference, it is clear that Microsoft is not doing too great these days as analysts all agree that it is a matter of time before the PS3 surpass it in sales. Already  it has overtaken the 360 in Europe and in Japan long ago… And according to the NPD numbers the PS3 has outsold the 360 5 months in a row this year in North America. So it was obvious that they needed some kind of big announcement or strategy to keep their title now as the number one selling next-gen console in America (the Wii is NOT next gen).

well-e.jpg A couple of weeks ago, I took my two youngest brothers and my youngest sister to see Wall-E. I’m a huge Pixar and so I expected the best! Dreamworks might make funny 3D animations but, in my humble opinion, they’re not generally instant classics like Pixar’s work. We were at a premiere  in a packed and age-diverse theater filled with excited people. The lights went out, the movies started, and about 90 minutes later the credits rolled. During those 90 minutes I was treated to a wonderful story and an epic feat!

console_war.jpg The fine folks at the Exploding Barrel have just put together a comprehensive “by the numbers” look at the games available for the Next Gen consoles + the Wii (the Wii is not Next Gen, I don’t care what anyone says).

Not only did they compare the top 20 games on each system (by metacritic scores with links included), they also compared the scores of exclusive games and cross-platform games. It was a bit of an eye opener in some ways and not a surprise at all in others. Console fanboys be warned, you might not like what you see.
