darkknight_promo2.jpgA warning to all who are reading this: This post is intended for all those people who’ve seen the Dark Knight on a regular theater screen (or smaller) and want to know what they might have missed.

In case you didn’t know, the Dark Knight is the first major motion picture shot partially with IMAX cameras. The end result is that some scenes are gorgeous to look at! The term “HD theater”probably describes the IMAX experience best!

One last spoiler warning, the following is a short list of scenes that were shot with an IMAX camera. If you haven’t seen the Dark Knight then read no further as some major plot points are mentioned. You’ve been warned.

[spoiler]

Opening Scene - Clown Bank Robbery (Full Scene) : The entire bank robbery was filmed with the IMAX cameras.

Shot of Bruce’s Penthouse (Very short): A few seconds, barely noticeable.

Shot of Parade (Very short): This is the scene of the parade in which the mayor was supposed to be shot. Also a few seconds, barely noticeable.

Honk Kong criminal abduction: (Partial) Only some outside shots were filmed with an IMAX camera. All of the fighting in the building was filmed with a regular camera. This includes the brief conversation between Fox and Lau.

Convoy Chase Scene  (Full scene): Arguably the best action scene in the movie was, of course, displayed in IMAX superiority!

Death of Rachel + Aftermath (Full Scene) Everything from the explosion to the brooding Bruce and the scene clean-up.

Lamborghini / Coleman Reese escape (Partial): Most of the Lamborghini scenes were in IMAX.

Hospital Explosion (Short): Once Joker leaves the hospital with most of it exploding behind him including the scene where he fiddles with the detonator.

Bridge verification (Very Short): A few seconds, barely noticeable.

Building Breach + Fight with Joker (Partial): It went back and forth from an IMAX to a regular camera but the IMAX scenes were considerably lengthy.

End Sequence (Full Scene): After Batman asks Commissioner Gordon to call in the killings and runs away, the rest of the movie is filmed with IMAX cameras all the way to the credits.

So, was watching it a second time on an IMAX screen worth it? Definitely! Is it a must? In all honesty, no. Just as DVD’s are good enough to watch a movie on, the regular movie screens are good enough as well. The movie is not more brilliant on IMAX, it’s just that about 20 minutes of it looked better. Still, if there’s one movie out there that deserves the IMAX treatment, it’s the Dark Knight.
