mtl.pngSo the regular season is just around the corner and it seems like the Montreal Canadiens are going to make a strong impression! It’s more important for the Canadiens to win the cup than any other team this year. Why? Because they have a lot to lose. The Canadiens are the only team to have won at least one Stanley Cup each decade of the league’s esistence!  Yes, 24 cups since 1916! If they don’t win this year, that record will sadly come to an end. Therefore, the Habs have the most to lose if they don’t win the cup…

So how will they do? What are they missing? Why do we believe they actually have a chance at the cup this year? Read on …

What are they missing?

They weren’t missing much.  They were really “on” during the off season and looking for a power-forward center.  They were looking for someone like Mats Sundin, but he punked out, and no one could wait for him that long to make up his damn mind.  So they traded for Robert Lang from Chicago, he’s older but he’s big, and has a solid right handed shot. Also  he played with Alex Kovalev for Pittsburg years back and had one of his best seasons, so they’re hoping to reunite them and see if the chemistry is still there.

What are their strong points?

mtl2.pngThey’re strong in nets.  They’ve got probably the best goalie tandem in Carey Price as starter and Jaroslav Halak as backup.  Only downside is the pressure of playing a full season, and mental pressure as well on two young goalies.  Carey Price is 21 years old, and Jaroslav Halak is 23. They’ve gotten better offensively, now have 3 legitimate scoring lines with the acquisition of Robert Lang and Alex Tanguay in the off season. They’ve got George Laraque as well, who is a 6’4, 255 pound, heavyweight champion of the league when it comes to kicking someone’s butt. Plus he raps to Vanilla Ice (he’s from Montréal and I think he’s Haitian).  You should check out his fights, he takes out this one guy on Boston who is 6’9 (Zdeno Chara #33)  in a fight.

Which players will do well?

Alex Kovalev is expected to do amazing.  Thomas Plakanec, Andrei Kostitsyn, Sergei Kostitsyn.  Pretty much the way they trained, and going from last years points results, the top line is expected to do amazing.  Also guys who really trained hard in the off season are going to do well. Oh, not to mention the amazing goalie Carey Price.

How well will they do in the regular season?

Most people have them pegged to finish 1st or 2nd in the eastern conference!

Will they make the playoffs?

Time will tell, but their chances look bright for making the play offs.  How far will depend on goal tending, and if Carey Price isn’t burned out by then.  As well if the younger kids learned something from last years playoffs and are hungry to go further.

So there you have it. Watch for the Canadiens to make some waves this year and, hopefully, end up with that coveted cup!
