Last night’s UFC 91 fight between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar was epic in more ways than one. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person who saw the similarity between it and the Rocky series, but I just couldn’t help bringing it up never-the-less.
Randy Couture is a legendary fighter a-la Rocky Balboa. Many believe he is past his prime. He came into the ring yesterday as a UFC Hall of Famer, a 5 time Championship holder, and present Heavy-Weight Champion. As if all of that wasn’t impressive by itself, he’s also 45 years young. His fighting yesterday had “Rocky 5″ written all over it.
Brock Lesnar is more beast than human. He has more than a passing likeness to Ivan Drago from
Rocky 3 Rocky 4, although he definitely out-weighs him. He also has a lot to prove since he comes from the WWE and feels he needs to prove that he’s a true fighter and not just a muscle-brained entertainer.
Sadly, the similarities with the Hollywood Blockbuster series ended there. Brock Lesnar defeated Randy Couture in the second round. I don’t want to take anything away from Lesnar, he fought well and deserved the victory, but I really wanted to see Couture prove that his age was not a factor. I still believe that he could have won and he did dominate in the most part until he was knocked down and ultimately defeated.
When interviewed after the fight, he said that he wants to continue to fight and that he feels he is only getting better. He made it clear he didn’t believe that his age was the deciding factor behind his loss. That’s a true fighter, ladies and gentlemen. Someone who would take on a person two-thirds his age and 45 pounds heavier than him and not back down afterwards.
For once I was actually hoping for a Hollywood ending …

Though i agree with the similarities mentioned, i do, have a hard time swallowing yesterday’s defeat. It seems to sum up the sport perfectly and that’s really not a good thing. How could one so big be defeated when through and through Couture was having his way until one quick slip cost him his title. Lesner is just too darn big, young and stubborn for it to have went any other way. If you ask me, for Lesner, it was a lose-lose situation. Think about it, if he won, big deal, he beat a man a whole lot smaller and, well, just old!
and if he loses, i guess you get the picture. Nope, i’m glad i didn’t watch the fight live. like watching a school girl getting creamed by the school’s bully!
It’s called pepper spray you silly goose, either that or maybe Couture can just settle down and concentrate on his dojo or something, hey, you never know, after yesterday’s fight, opening up a pizzaria wouldn’t be all too shabby!
C ya!

my response to that is Sonny Liston vs Mohamed Ali. Sonny should have won but lost to a smaller less experienced rookie!

All I can say is, as a long time fan of Brock Lesnar, I congratulate him.
People will never give him the benefit of the doubt, but he will always do what he can to prove his critics wrong.

This brings up an interesting question. Should there be a super heavy weight class? I mean think about it, look at the division in the weight classes:
* Lightweight: 145 to 155 lb (67 to 70 kg)
* Welterweight: 156 to 170 lb (71 to 77 kg)
* Middleweight: 171 to 185 lb (78 to 84 kg)
*Light Heavyweight:186 to 205lb (85 to 93kg)
* Heavyweight: 206 to 265 lb (94 to 120 kg)
You see how RIDICULOUS it is? the fact is, there aren’t many heavyweighters in UFC and so they have to cap it at 206 anything bigger than that is still JUST heavy weight. But if you are 150 lbs you cant fight someone who is say 158 lbs…
I am afraid that the fact that he is so big, and as much as I hate to admit it knows what he is doing, will mean that we simply wont see many heavy weighters for a long while. Who will fight him?
I would’ve loved to see Couture win for that exact reason, and I simply love to see technique and experience triumph over brute strength and size (being 5′ 9 myself). But alas it was Bane fighting Volton…
Oh and one more thing Drago was in Rocky 4 not 3

I see you point, but if they split Heavyweight to, say, 206 – 236 and add a Super Heavyweight 237 – 265 (or something similar), who would they have fighting in the Super Heavyweight division? A few lousy Sumo wrestlers and Brock Lesnar. Oh, and the occasional Heavyweight Champion who wants to have 2 belts.
Oh, and about Rocky 3-4, gimme a break I haven’t seen those movies in like 10 years

i second Osama’s sentiments…for 4 reasons:
1-he’s right
2-we’re in the same hemisphere
3-he’s right
4-you’re wrong

It seems either way we wont get many heavyweighters. Try to understand this is Brock’s what 4th fight in the UFC? WHERE in any combat sport can someone get a title shot after just 3 fights? There already arent many heavyweighters, AND none of them want to fight Brock.
I dont know if having a super heavy weight division is the best solution, but at least it would be a little more fair, and we might still get some normal heavy weight fights.
I dont know, but I get a feeling there will be only like 2 heavyweight fights a year now… Maybe one with brock.

Oh and one more thing its warmer on this side of the hemisphere
