left4deadthumbnail.jpeIt’s been a month and a half now of mowing down zombie after zombie in Valve’s spectacular coop extravaganza: Left 4 Dead.

I have to admit, Left 4 Dead disappointed me on day one. I beat all of the campaigns on the normal difficulty setting in 5 hours on the first day. I played them alone since my wife didn’t want to try it and I didn’t know anyone else who had it on the 360. In general, I don’t like playing online with people I don’t know so I went solo. When it was all over, I felt somewhat unsatisfied. It was short and didn’t feel very different from a regular FPS.

Then I finally convinced my wife to try Versus Mode with me online and that was the end of my social life. Now we’re both addicted and play it daily yelling at each other to get the Hunter off or freaking out at the sight of the dreaded Witch! Valve, you’ve got a winner in Left 4 Dead and I hope you don’t take too long to come out with some DLC!

Now that that’s out of the way, I wanted to share my best moment playing Left 4 Dead. So without further ado, and in no particular order:

left4dead3thumbnail.jpeI knew we’d make it!

I launched the game on Expert mode and played online with 3 other ambitious souls. We’re trudging along at a painful pace as wave after wave of infected bog us down. In the end, there are only two of us. Francis (Me) and some dude playing Louis. We’re within a few steps of the safe house when Louis yells “I knew we’d make it … ARGHH!!!” as a Hunter jumps him out of nowhere! I try to bunt the hunter off when something wraps around me and pulls me away …. and it was all over so close to the finish. I should have felt frustrated at that point but the entire episode felt so much like a scene from a B horror movie that I was actually smiling to myself for the rest of the night!

For those of you who might not be aware, there’s an achievement in the game for getting a head shot on the Witch character and killing her with that one shot. I must have tried 20 to 30 times to no avail before that one fateful day me, my wife, a co-worker, and his girlfriend came upon a witch in a narrow alley. There was no way to get around her so we decided to double back when the ground began to shake and a Tank was upon us from whence we just came! It seemed hopeless since two of us were limping and we had no dodging room so I quickly turned off my flashlight, approached the witch from behind, and unloaded my shotgun in the back of her head killing her in one shot, nabbing my achievement, and eliciting cheers from my fellow survivors. Sadly, the tank incapacitated 2 of us and a boomer + 2 hunters finished us off but I was clutch for one magic moment, and I’ll never forget it!

left4dead2.jpeHelp yourself!

We were in the hospital as the zombies this time in versus mode. I was a smoker and my wife was a hunter. The other two infected were nowhere in sight and all 4 survivors were headed towards the elevator. One of the survivors was making my life difficult by closing all of the doors behind the survivors as they progressed through the level. I got lucky enough to grab him with my smoker’s tongue just as he was about to go through the door. I dragged him all the way to me and it took a bit of time before one of the survivors realized he was missing and doubled back. My wife was getting ready to jump the would-be savior, who was still a good distance away,  when I had a quick idea and asked her to jump my victim instead. She did so and I had just enough time to charge my tongue again and grab the newcomer before he had a chance to know what hit him. Then when the other two finally came back, my wife (having finished off the first and second survivor) jumped one at the exact same time as another hunter jumped the other. It was beautiful, 4 full-health survivors dead without a single special-infected casualty!

Anyone else out there have a memorable Left 4 Dead moment to share?
