I’m not much of a facebook normally, I log on only when I get a notification of a message by e-mail, so obviously I was pretty neutral about the announcement that Facebook was making it’s way to the X-Box 360. Still, I had to give it a try, and I’m sure glad I did!
I was expecting a heavy, clunky, feature-to-feature adaptation of Facebook on the 360. Instead, whoever developped this app was smart enough to strip it off a lot of non-essential bells and whistles and in-so-doing sculpt a mostly enjoyable experience out of a normally mundane one.
What stood out as the best “feature” to me was the ability of seeing which of my friends on facebook have an X-Box 360 account and being able to add them easily to my X-Box Live friends list. You can also find out which of your X-Box Live friends are on facebook but that’s somewhat less useful.
Now this part surprised me, but I was able to go through all of my facebook friends and look through their photos at an astounding speed! This is the #1 reason I feel it’s great that this app is scaled down, it’s SO much faster than Facebook.com that it’s hard to believe. Seriously, I would no sooner press to see the next image and it would be right there for me to see! And right on my TV screen where I can easily and comfortably show them off to family and friends! Hmm… maybe this is the best feature after all, close call.
Of course you can also check on your friend’s statuses and info. The info part’s fine but personally I would have rather been able to access my facebook message inbox than useless “Joe is making toast” statuses. Also, the infamous “Wall” seem to have been left out for reasons I cannot fathom. I won’t miss it myself, but I’m sure many out there will. Thankfully, all of the other clutter and garbage that normally comes with facebook is MIA. No groups, advertisements, mafia wars, gifts, and a million other random invites that I get on a daily basis.
There you have it, give it a try even if you’re not a fan of Facebook. You won’t regret it.
