After Alfredo from theexplodingbarrel suggested I read Y the Last Man, my good friend Jean-Francois lent me the first books from the series. I was instantly hooked! I’ve been a comic book fan practically since I was able to read but rarely has a non-superhero comic so captivated me.
I’ve read quite a few non-superhero comics in my day and so have decided to make a list of a few I highly recommend. This isn’t a “top x of all time” list since I haven’t read every non-superhero comic out there.
Since the first day I picked up a comic book I’ve wished I had superpowers. I know that I’m not alone in this, especially now that super heroes are on TV and Movies at an unprecedented scale, but I’m pretty sure not many people out there have given it as much thought as I have.
Years ago, in 1991 to be specific, I picked up a copy of Jim Lee’s X-Men # 1. The comic itself was brilliant and the ones that followed it were equally amazing, but I did have one complaint… In the first few pages, Charles Xavier tries to wow Jean Grey by speaking in French and ends up making himself look like a complete fool. Actually, it was the writers that looked like fools with their poor French translation. I’ve seen similar cases here and there for a few more years after that, but I did take a break from reading comic books several years ago (with the exception of the Exiles) and have only restarted reading recently.
Quite a while ago,
A warning to all who are reading this: This post is intended for all those people who’ve seen the Dark Knight on a regular theater screen (or smaller) and want to know what they might have missed.
Now before you discard my theory for its unbelievability, just hear me out! If you were Marvel and you were making a ton of comic-book inspired movies, wouldn’t a new generation of Superman movies make you more than a little nervous? Sure, the first Batmans were great, but that series quickly went to the gutters by the time the 4th one was made. Why would Marvel have to worry about a new Batman (little did they know). But Superman’s different…
With Iron Man holding the banner for Marvel and Dark Knight (or Joker, really) leading the way for DC, the question has to be asked, who makes the best comic-related movies?
When I heard the news that the new Iron Man movie was actually pretty good, I have to say that I took it with a grain of salt. To be honest, I don’t think much of the recent Marvel movies. Sure, they’re pretty much all better than Superman Returns, but none so far have been as good as Batman Begins (with the possible exception of the second X-Men movie). Coming from me, it might sound strange since I’m a huge comic book fan and movie enthusiast, but I started to believe that non-Batman comics and movies should not cross paths again. At least not when Hollywood is involved.
I tried my hand at making a Joe Madureira tribute PS3 theme and I’m actually very happy with the result! For those who don’t know, Joe Madureira is one of the best comic book artists ever and definitely my favorite.
