Comic Books

y.jpgAfter Alfredo from theexplodingbarrel suggested I read Y the Last Man, my good friend Jean-Francois lent me the first books from the series. I was instantly hooked! I’ve been a comic book fan practically since I was able to read but rarely has a non-superhero comic so captivated me.

I’ve read quite a few non-superhero comics in my day and so have decided to make a list of a few I highly recommend. This isn’t a “top x of all time” list since I haven’t read every non-superhero comic out there.

super-mom.jpgSince the first day I picked up a comic book I’ve wished I had superpowers. I know that I’m not alone in this, especially now that super heroes are on TV and Movies at an unprecedented scale, but I’m pretty sure not many people out there have given it as much thought as I have.

Sure, some powers seem great because our favorite super heroes have them, but those heroes exist in a different (fictional) reality where the rules of our reality don’t apply (such as having other super-powered beings) . Also, most heroes have multiple powers, not just one.

professorxst1.jpgYears ago, in 1991 to be specific, I picked up a copy of Jim Lee’s X-Men # 1. The comic itself was brilliant and the ones that followed it were equally amazing, but I did have one complaint… In the first few pages, Charles Xavier tries to wow Jean Grey by speaking in French and ends up making himself look like a complete fool. Actually, it was the writers that looked like fools with their poor French translation. I’ve seen similar cases here and there for a few more years after that, but I did take a break from reading comic books several years ago (with the exception of the Exiles) and have only restarted reading recently.

newexiles-777495.jpgQuite a while ago, I wrote about the end of the Exile comic book and the beginning of the New Exiles. In short, I stated how I was a big fan of the series and was saddened that it had come to an end. I did start reading the New Exiles from the first issue and it has proved to be a total disappointment just as I had anticipated.

So why is the new series bad and what made the old series great? Let me explain…

darkknight_promo2.jpgA warning to all who are reading this: This post is intended for all those people who’ve seen the Dark Knight on a regular theater screen (or smaller) and want to know what they might have missed.

In case you didn’t know, the Dark Knight is the first major motion picture shot partially with IMAX cameras. The end result is that some scenes are gorgeous to look at! The term “HD theater”probably describes the IMAX experience best!

One last spoiler warning, the following is a short list of scenes that were shot with an IMAX camera. If you haven’t seen the Dark Knight then read no further as some major plot points are mentioned. You’ve been warned.

877411superman-returns-posters.jpgNow before you discard my theory for its unbelievability, just hear me out! If you were Marvel and you were making a ton of comic-book inspired movies, wouldn’t a new generation of Superman movies make you more than a little nervous? Sure, the first Batmans were great, but that series quickly went to the gutters by the time the 4th one was made. Why would Marvel have to worry about a new Batman (little did they know). But Superman’s different…

marvelvsdc.jpgWith Iron Man holding the banner for Marvel and Dark Knight (or Joker, really) leading the way for DC, the question has to be asked, who makes the best comic-related movies?

It’s hard to compare since Marvel has 30 movies while DC only has 19 and more than half of DC’s movies are about either Superman or Batman. Still, the question has to be asked and hopefully answered. Please note, for the purpose of this comparison, we’re only taking into account live-action movies (ie: no animations).

So how do we go about this? Do we only count the good movies for each side and see who has the most? Do we count all of the movies and take a percentage of good vs bad? Or do we look at the best single comic-book movie and crown the champion that way? Let’s do all three!

iron_man_movie.jpgWhen I heard the news that the new Iron Man movie was actually pretty good, I have to say that I took it with a grain of salt. To be honest, I don’t think much of the recent Marvel movies. Sure, they’re pretty much all better than Superman Returns, but none so far have been as good as Batman Begins (with the possible exception of the second X-Men movie). Coming from me, it might sound strange since I’m a huge comic book fan and movie enthusiast, but I started to believe that non-Batman comics and movies should not cross paths again. At least not when Hollywood is involved.

Inspired by the many dedications to video game characters I’ve seen around, like this one of Mario, I’ve decided to make my own dedication to my favourite Street Fighter character: Ken (a.k.a. Ken Masters) from the Street Fighter video games/movies/comics.

joe_mad_street_fighter_cover.jpgI tried my hand at making a Joe Madureira tribute PS3 theme and I’m actually very happy with the result! For those who don’t know, Joe Madureira is one of the best comic book artists ever and definitely my favorite.

To name a few comics, he’s worked on X-Men, Street-Fighter, and the Ultimates ! Not to mention a short-lived series of his own creation called Battle Chasers. He’s also made a lot of concept art for video games. The man is a living legend and is one of the biggest reasons I draw today.

Anyhow, if you’d like to download and use the theme, you can do so here directly from your PS3′s browser! I’d really appreciate if you would also give my theme a 5 star vote if you like it ;)
