Movies

art_copy_posterSo, I saw Doug Pray’s “Art & Copy” the other night. Because it’s essentially an ad for advertising, it offered a novel perspective (wait for it): a movie about advertising that features conversations with people that actually work in advertising. No Klein-ist sweater and keffayeh wearing leftist intellectuals/activists, mostly just ad-(wo)men.

marveldisney

With the news that Marvel was just bought out by big brother Disney for a whopping 4 Billion dollars, one has to wonder what kind of repercussions such a buyout would bring to both companies.

Look no further folks, for beyond this point lies predictions on what’s about to come.

A warning is probably in order, the following is ridiculous in nature and is to be read only by those with a sense of humor.

larrydavidWhen invited to view a pre-screening of the new Woody Allen directed movie, I was thrilled. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly a fan of Allen, but I’ve been itching for a good comedy for a while and was hoping “Whatever Works” would scratch that itch … instead it gave me a rash.

The movie started off fine. The first part had plenty of laughs, though they were usually “amused chuckles”  more than “uncontrollable gawfaws”. Still, I was in the mood to laugh and it sporadically complied with my wish, so half way through the movie I was pleased. Then the proverbial manure hit the air ventilation system in a big way.

spockI confess, I am and have always been a closet Trekkie. Until now, only my closest friends knew and they were all sworn to secrecy. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done other extremely geeky things in my youth such as code in basic, read fantasy novels, operated my own BBS, and even played Dungeons and Dragons … ok forget that last one, I’m not ready to confess that just yet.

Moving right along, so I’ve been a Trekkie since the first episode of The Next Generation and have never looked back since. I even like the ill-received Enterprise series. Now that you know all of this, it won’t come as a surprise that I had milk coming out my nose when a Star Trek reboot movie was announced about a year ago. Strangely,  I wasn’t even drinking milk at the time.

x-men-wolverineI’m a long time comic book collector and fan. I have every X-Men comic book from 1991 – 2001 (both main series, annuals, spin-offs, etc…). I take my comics seriously, especially when it comes to the X-Men. I liked the first X-Men movie, LOVED the second, and absolutely hated the third. To be honest, because of the third movie, I didn’t have too much hope for X-Men Origins: Wolverine even before I saw it. It seems that even with low expectations, one can still be let down.

dr_manhattanMy workplace offered me free tickets to the Watchmen movie on opening night. I have been avoiding the graphic novel ever since the movie was announced simply because everyone I know who’s read it kept harping about how it’s impossible to adapt it to the big screen. I decided that I’d rather watch the movie without reading the comics before hand so that I can evaluate it as a stand-alone product and not as a movie adaptation.

the_godfather.jpgLet’s get something straight, this is a list of Hollywood movie quotes that are overly used in everyday life.

This list is purely an opinion piece and is based on my personal experiences within my circle of friends and acquaintances.

If you disagree with this list, then I’m going to make you an offer you can’t refuse: Write one yourself! Feel free to use the comment section on the bottom to do so.

super-mom.jpgSince the first day I picked up a comic book I’ve wished I had superpowers. I know that I’m not alone in this, especially now that super heroes are on TV and Movies at an unprecedented scale, but I’m pretty sure not many people out there have given it as much thought as I have.

Sure, some powers seem great because our favorite super heroes have them, but those heroes exist in a different (fictional) reality where the rules of our reality don’t apply (such as having other super-powered beings) . Also, most heroes have multiple powers, not just one.

star_wars_clone_wars.jpgI got a free ticket to see Star Wars: The Clone Wars from work on the premiere night. Everyone pretty much knew beforehand that the movie sucked but I figured if I went in with low expectations, I would enjoy it anyway. Sadly I was mistaken.

It’s a shame since I really loved the cartoons and was looking forward to the made for TV 3D equivalent. Still, it wasn’t all bad, the character models were really nice, especially Count Dooku, and I suppose it was … err… colorful?
