kof12Since it was announced, but especially since I played Street Fighter 4 and was mostly disappointed in it, I’ve been looking forward to King of Fighters 12. I’ve watched all of the youtube game play videos, read every bit of news about it as it came out, and even managed not to be deterred by the mixed but mostly negative press it’s been getting.

After all, King of Fighters does not share the mass market appeal Street Fighter has over the years and I can see how someone who isn’t a fan of the series (which I have recently become) would deduct automatic points for what they might see as a cheap Street Fighter knock-off.

rufusSo, after nearly a decade since the last Street Fighter and almost 2 years since it’s announcement, Street Fighter 4 has been released. Being a hardcore Street Fighter fan, I took the day off of work and bought it on day 1. So, was it worth the wait? Did it live up to all of the hype?

Honestly, I hated it for the first 1-2 hours and almost gave up on it then and there. The only thing that kept me playing was the 60$ I had just dropped on it. I was determined to find some enjoyment out of the game, and surprisingly it did grow on me. Yes, the game is fun and, yes, that’s the most important thing in a game, but what irks me is this game could have been epic! Instead, it’s a sloppy but fun fighter that is hard to take seriously. What’s so wrong with it? Read on: (more…)

mkvssf2.jpg I’ve been a fighting game fan as far back as I remember. I’ve played most of the iterations of both the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games in the arcades on the first day of their respective launches. I would have even done the same for Street Fighter 4 had there been an arcade anywhere in Montreal that had it. Although I love the genre to death, that doesn’t mean I hold all of its constituents to the same esteem. In fact, I’ve preferred the Street Fighter series hands-down for many reasons.

street_fighter_41.jpgThere’s something really confusing about how some companies decide what games to make. Every true Street Fighter fan out there was hoping for Street Fighter 4 to be a gorgeous 2D fighter with controls similar to Street Fighter 3. What does Capcom do? They make a 3D Street Fighter 2 remake with scaled-back controls and crappy new characters and they try their best to convince us it’ll be as good as a 2D fighter. Why not oblige us in the first place? Why not call it Street Fighter EX 4 instead? No one would complain, everyone expects mediocrity from the EX fighters. Why must they drag our formerly beloved franchise through the mud?

capcom_vs_2.jpgI don’t get Capcom these days. Don’t they care what their fan-base wants? I understand it might have been too late to switch Street Fighter 4 back to its 2D roots even though many of its loyal fan-base pretty much gave up on the game, but if they’re going to announce yet another Capcom vs game, wouldn’t you think they would learn their lesson?

Apparently not. According to Famitsu, the newest VS game will be in 3D that a co-worker of mine said looked straight outta the Dreamcast era. I can’t help but agree. I guess this gives me even more of a reason to convert to SNK… For shame Capcom, for shame!

king_of_fighters_xii_logo.jpgAs far back as I can remember, I’ve always been a Street Fighter fan. I remember the very first time I played Street Fighter II in the arcades. I was 12 years old and I had taken my then 5 year old brother with me to the arcades. I chose Guile and he chose Dhalsim and I wasn’t able to land a single hit on him.
