Ah the wonderful world of Collectible Card Games.

I’ve played many over the years, and here are my personal top 5.

Please note that I sadly haven’t played every CCG out there, but those I’ve heard good things about have an honorable mention at the end.

Nearly a year ago, my friend Sebastien nudged me in the direction of this pretty cool and addictive game called Elements. I’m surprised to say that Elements has kept me playing on and off since.

What kind of game is it? Well it’s a free, web-based, flash, card, video game. Quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

It can be described as a poor man’s Magic Online, and it generally doesn’t have the balance and professionalism that Magic Online does, but it’s  far from just a clone. There are several elements that makes Elements (bad pun intended) stand out from it’s big daddy.

broodmother-dragonLast Saturday I attended my very second Magic the Gathering pre-release event. This time was actually a lot more fun than the last. I came in 6th overall with a record of 3-2-0 and received a foil Path to Exile card with a very nice alternate art and a booster that really didn’t have anything of value in it :P

I did open a Tezzerret the Seeker and a Meddling Mage so in 2 of my 6 sealed boosters so I was obviously very pleased overall!

Not to mention that I love the new expansion: Alara Reborn. Continuing with the fine tradition of posting card impression, please find following a list of cards that I was either impressed with or disappointed in from the new expansion.

malfegorThis Saturday was a first for me. A group of us from work participated in a Magic the Gathering pre-release sealed tournament. It was my very first and the experience was overall very positive. Yes, I’ve been playing Magic the Gathering on and off since 4th edition and have not gone to a pre-release before but that will change as I don’t intend to miss another if I can help it.

akoha-logo-final-draft.jpgI was reading Rayna’s blog the other day when she mentioned this new game Akoha. What can I say, the concept behind Akoha is quite brilliant! A card game that rewards people for doing good deeds in real life? That’s awesome on so many levels!I love card games and I always talk about doing good deeds so I feel almost as if the designers of this game had me in mind all along! Rayna just gave me my starter deck on Friday and I can’t wait to get started spreading good all other the world and tracking how far my good deeds go! (more…)

albino_troll.jpgI haven’t played Magic the Gathering with “real cards” in years. In fact, I had taken apart all of my decks and put my more valuable cards in binders and the less valuable ones in boxes. They would have very likely stayed that way if I didn’t stumble upon 2 co-workers playing on their lunch break one fateful day!Fond memories of casting dragons and tapping assassins came flooding in! I asked if they would kindly include me in on their next game and they gladly accepted, but not without some hesitation. I had confessed that I had not played in years and they were worried that my ancient cards might not hold-up to their newer ones. One of them even offered to let me play with a pre-contructed deck until I got myself some new cards. I gracefully declined of course… (more…)
