marveldisney

With the news that Marvel was just bought out by big brother Disney for a whopping 4 Billion dollars, one has to wonder what kind of repercussions such a buyout would bring to both companies.

Look no further folks, for beyond this point lies predictions on what’s about to come.

A warning is probably in order, the following is ridiculous in nature and is to be read only by those with a sense of humor.

x-men-wolverineI’m a long time comic book collector and fan. I have every X-Men comic book from 1991 – 2001 (both main series, annuals, spin-offs, etc…). I take my comics seriously, especially when it comes to the X-Men. I liked the first X-Men movie, LOVED the second, and absolutely hated the third. To be honest, because of the third movie, I didn’t have too much hope for X-Men Origins: Wolverine even before I saw it. It seems that even with low expectations, one can still be let down.

levelYup, that’s another year and another birthday for me. This time it’s the big 3-0. To be honest, people around me are making a way bigger deal about my age than I am. Yesterday I was 29 and today I am thirty, so what? I don’t feel any different. Fine, I’ve packed on a few extra pounds and lost some hair in the last 10 years, but that doesn’t mean I’m any different on the inside! I still read comics, I still watch movies, I still play video games, I still play card games, I still play basketball, I still listen to music, I still read novels, and I still got love for the streets!

Then it got me thinking, sure I still do all those wonderful things and more, but have the years changed the way I go about them? Does reading a Spider-Man book still make me fantasize about climbing buildings and peeping into bedroom windows? Do I still watch movies thinking I’ll be a movie star one day? Part of living is growing, learning, changing, adapting… so how is Osama version 3.0 any better than his version 2.0 equivalent? Read on …

spiderman-sadLike any franchise that’s been around since the early 60’s, Spider-man has it’s fair share of ups and downs. When said franchise is popular, the bad is often forgotten and the good glorified and forever remembered. The purpose of this post is to remind the reader of some of the bad that has sullied Spider-Man comics in the past. Lest we forget.

listing.jpgIn my endless trek to experience what the entire internet has to offer, I found myself on a free online comic called Slaughter Inc. I was immediately taken aback by the sheer quality of the comic in both art and writing.  Each page looks like a hand-painted work of art and the dialog feels straight out of a Quentin Tarantino movie.

The subject is right up my alley too. I don’t know what’s wrong with me these days but I can’t seem to get enough of zombies! From re-watching Shawn of the Dead, to being alarmingly addicted to Left 4 Dead … and now Slaughter Inc? What’s next, looking for brains in the frozen food section of my local grocery store?

y.jpgAfter Alfredo from theexplodingbarrel suggested I read Y the Last Man, my good friend Jean-Francois lent me the first books from the series. I was instantly hooked! I’ve been a comic book fan practically since I was able to read but rarely has a non-superhero comic so captivated me.

I’ve read quite a few non-superhero comics in my day and so have decided to make a list of a few I highly recommend. This isn’t a “top x of all time” list since I haven’t read every non-superhero comic out there.

super-mom.jpgSince the first day I picked up a comic book I’ve wished I had superpowers. I know that I’m not alone in this, especially now that super heroes are on TV and Movies at an unprecedented scale, but I’m pretty sure not many people out there have given it as much thought as I have.

Sure, some powers seem great because our favorite super heroes have them, but those heroes exist in a different (fictional) reality where the rules of our reality don’t apply (such as having other super-powered beings) . Also, most heroes have multiple powers, not just one.

professorxst1.jpgYears ago, in 1991 to be specific, I picked up a copy of Jim Lee’s X-Men # 1. The comic itself was brilliant and the ones that followed it were equally amazing, but I did have one complaint… In the first few pages, Charles Xavier tries to wow Jean Grey by speaking in French and ends up making himself look like a complete fool. Actually, it was the writers that looked like fools with their poor French translation. I’ve seen similar cases here and there for a few more years after that, but I did take a break from reading comic books several years ago (with the exception of the Exiles) and have only restarted reading recently.

newexiles-777495.jpgQuite a while ago, I wrote about the end of the Exile comic book and the beginning of the New Exiles. In short, I stated how I was a big fan of the series and was saddened that it had come to an end. I did start reading the New Exiles from the first issue and it has proved to be a total disappointment just as I had anticipated.

So why is the new series bad and what made the old series great? Let me explain…
