Prior to becoming a game designer, I had actually not read any books on game design. I’ve been an avid gamer since the age of 5 and a web/graphic designer since highschool so it wasn’t much of a stretch, but I hadn’t had any actual formal education in the field prior to getting into the industry. It’s funny but I started reading game design books only after getting the job. So far, all of the books I’ve read on the subject have been an utter waste of time except for a Theory of Fun by Raph Koster.
I was reading Rayna’s blog the other day when
I’ve been an avid video game player since the first time I put a quarter in that ‘Weird Space Invaders thing’ all those years ago. Many games passed through my hands since then, some good, some bad, but no matter in witch category they would fall, many would have one critical flaw: they often confuse challenge with frustration.
This might not be big news to most but, this being the first game I work on that wasn’t canceled/postponed, I’m totally psyched! Yup, my first ever designed game to see a public release, Midnight Pool for Wii Ware, is coming soon to a Wii near you!
People often ask me what it is that a Game Designer does. I tried to explain it but in some people’s minds there are only artists and programmers.
