ivy-versus-mitsurugi-in-soul-calibur-4-screenshot-big.jpgOver this weekend, I’ve spent a significant amount of time with both the 360 and the PS3 versions of Soul Calibur. Since I own both an X-Box 360 and a Playstation 3, I wanted to see which version was worth getting.

I have to admit, both version were better than I expected and pretty close one from the other. It more or less boils down to what you’re looking for in this fighter.

So what were the differences? Read on!

sc4_sm_ivy.jpgFirst let me say I have been a Soul Calibur enthusiast not just from Soul Calibur 1, but from its often forgotten  predecessor Soul Blade on PS1, remembering vividly the crazy hours I dedicated to the world tour mode in order to get every possible sword!

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about the next gen title, and I must say I am quite pleased. First of all if you haven’t already seen, the presentation is incredible. The lighting, character models and overall art style is masterful. However it may at times feel a little congested, the simplicity of the older games due to less graphical capability made it feel more raw and precise. Here characters have so much beautiful follow through and secondary action with cloth, armor and hair, albeit stunningly gorgeous may be a little much (just a little). Yet every time I pop that game in I am taken back by the beauty of it.

street_fighter_41.jpgThere’s something really confusing about how some companies decide what games to make. Every true Street Fighter fan out there was hoping for Street Fighter 4 to be a gorgeous 2D fighter with controls similar to Street Fighter 3. What does Capcom do? They make a 3D Street Fighter 2 remake with scaled-back controls and crappy new characters and they try their best to convince us it’ll be as good as a 2D fighter. Why not oblige us in the first place? Why not call it Street Fighter EX 4 instead? No one would complain, everyone expects mediocrity from the EX fighters. Why must they drag our formerly beloved franchise through the mud?

soul-calibur_new_sith_2.jpgWhen first I heard that Yoda and Darth Vader were going to be in Soul Calibur IV, I was more peeved that I was going to have to decide which version to get since Yoda was to be on the 360 version, and Vader on the PS3. Although the choice was easy (Vader > Yoda), I was still peeved that I wouldn’t get both. That’s how I felt when Soul Calibur 2 came out and I had to play with Link when Spawn was the character I really wanted (forget Heihachi, he was useless anyway).

I loved Link and, although I agree he didn’t fully fit-in because his bomb move and other similar moves, I still had fun playing with him. And Spawn has had many incarnations, one of which was Medieval Spawn. Having those two in the Soul Calibur world was a bit of a stretch, but not NEARLY as big of one as having Star Wars characters.
